Great work at home jobs in 2023
I’ve put together a list of my favorite WFH roles, complete with options for both beginners and experienced telecommuters alike. My favorites at the current moment include:
- Customer Service Representative
- Software Engineering
- Accounting roles
- Accounting roles
I’ll start with these “real” corporate roles, and then explore some freelancing options available to you as well.
1. Customer Service Representative
Most all large companies out there need customer service representatives – CSRs for short. CSRs oftentimes provide a whole host of support via phone, email, or even live chat with customers all over the country or world.
Since the pandemic started, companies have increasingly allowed customer service reps to work from home. And as long as reps continue to provide quick and professional support with simple communication, this trend is likely to continue.
2. Software Engineering
Companies have also increasingly allowed software engineers to work at home. In a field that is expected to expand by up to 25% in the next decade, this presents a huge opportunity.
For those that don’t know, software engineers develop and maintain digital systems and applications for companies worldwide. The work is highly technical by nature and is a perfect fix for those that can write code and want to be challenged each day.
3. Accounting
Accounting is another field with roles that can largely be worked from anywhere in the world. With an estimated 136,000 accounting openings per year this decade (according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics), there are plenty of opportunities for those interested in the work, regardless of whether you hold an active CPA license or not.

- Graphic design: Brands and companies across the world need graphics and sleek designs to make their brands pop. Graphic designers can even purchase a whole host of software solutions to help them, including Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, and others too!
Legitimate freelancing jobs at home
Remember – nobody says that your work from home gig has to be for a business or corporation. In fact, freelancing can be a great way to make some money and enjoy the process of working towards financial freedom.

1. Web Designer
Web designers across the country use their incredible skills to build new or renovate existing websites. Most designers use HTML and CSS code to help them get started. Existing sites can be updated using various content management systems (CMS) systems.
More advanced web designers may also engage in user experience (UX) and search engine optimization (SEO) projects too!
2. Virtual Assistant
Businesses all over need virtual assistants to help handle a variety of administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, sending emails, and making phone calls on behalf of their clients. VAs may also do data entry, provide customer service support, file, or perform competitive research.
Most VA gigs are part-time by nature, and they can provide a great opportunity for freelancers to get their feet wet with entrepreneurship.
3. Social Media Manager
In another potential freelancing gig that you can work from home, many companies invest heavily in hiring social media managers to help build out their social media reach online. Your responsibilities could vary by client, but are likely to include some or all of the following:
- Creating content
- Developing strategy
- Engaging with followers
You’ll be expected to work on various platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even LinkedIn.
4. Freelance writing
Blogging, copyrighting, and editing are great ways to get started making money online. If you’re not interested in pursuing an entrepreneurial job from home, you may also consider working as a freelancer writer for a company to produce content for their websites or blogs.
You may also be able to work as a full-time editor or writing consultant developing ongoing content strategies across multiple platforms.
5. Online tutoring
It has never been easier to make money tutoring from the comfort of home.
You may opt to start a tutoring business or work for an already existing business. Regardless of which avenue you pursue, you’ll likely tutor through Skype or another platform, and can choose a variety of subjects to teach, including:
- A middle school/high school subject
- SAT/ACT preparation
- Professional designation preparation
- Licensing help
6. Transcription services
Even with the advancement of artificial intelligence and other automated solutions online, there is a need for transcription services out there. Among your potential responsibilities include writing what you hear on recordings of medical reports, conversations, and other recordings.
To be successful, you’ll need listening skills, good attention to detail, the ability to work quickly, and patience while deciphering difficult or low quality audio recordings.
Why do some companies like remote work?
You’re probably wondering why some companies have embraced remote work and why others seem so adamantly against it as a long term solution.
In my opinion, it comes down to two main variables: costs and employee efficiency.
First, let’s explore the costs. It is cheaper for companies to have employees working from their own homes. With more employees from home, companies have less overhead, need less office space, and can save on things like electric and other expenses too.
It’s easy to imagine why companies would want to lower their overhead costs by as much as possible.
But companies also need to balance employee efficiency and make sure that the business’s work gets completed and that the business continues to grow. And this is exactly where some companies have divided opinions.
Some businesses and certain roles have actually seen an uptick in worker productivity in remote environments, while others have not. Those that have not are more likely to require in-person work.
Companies offering telecommuting roles
Luckily for those that are interested, some of America’s most recognizable and best performing businesses offer a plethora of roles that you can work from home. Among them are:
- UnitedHealth Group Inc.
- Amazon
- American Express
- Apple
- Salesforce
1. UnitedHealth Group
UnitedHealth Group and its associated businesses, including Optum, offers a whole host of remote jobs, including those in:
- Data Analysis
- Consulting
- Nursing
- Pharmacy
- Social Work
Over the past couple of years, UHG has prided itself in flexibility, and it shows in their job postings.
2. Amazon
Amazon’s corporate arm also offers many opportunities for those that prefer to (or need to) work remotely. Much like UnitedHealth Group, opportunities are spread across multiple business units and job functions, but the most WFH roles appear to be concentrated in these areas:
- Customer Service
- Engineering
- Sales
3. American Express
American Express is next on the list, with telecommuting roles available for those working in sales, product management, data engineering, and more career paths too! With a workforce of 64,000, it is believed that nearly 20% of these, over 10,000 jobs, are great work at home jobs!
4. Apple
I doubt I have a reader unfamiliar with Apple’s products. Regardless, Apple has broken with most Silicon Valley technology companies with its’ return to office policies. While many workers are now back, they continue to hire for remote roles that can be worked all across the country.
A quick browse of the Apple Jobs website reveals that most of the remote job options are related to customer service, but there seems to be fewer open roles than UnitedHealth Group, Amazon, or American Express.
5. Salesforce
Salesforce has been in the news a lot lately for the wrong reasons. But at the end of the day, they remain a huge player in the technology space. Plus, they offer remote jobs in the following fields:
- Developers
- User Experience (UX)
- Project Management
Whether Salesforce remains on this list remains to be seen, as their CEO Mark Benioff has made comments about productivity issues.
Of course, this is not an exhaustive list. Other companies offering a large number of work from home roles include:
